Blacks and the Media
These pictures represent a positive image about blacks and what they stand for. These pictures are showing how each and everyone of these African Americans' went against every statistic and everyone who said they would never make it. It also goes against the countries view of blacks , and shows that not all blacks are mess ups and make nothing of their lives and also shows that they made it. When I say they "made" I am meaning they have the power to change the views of those who saw them as worthless. These are just a few successful blacks who wanted better for themselves and their families. they saw education as a way out. What I see when I look at this picture is beauty for the fact that even though they are successful the girls are being goofy and the guys are still representing where they are from. This is related to the quote we analyzed on Monday because the country has made it so hard for us to be happy for successful blacks because were so used to seeing them down and out. Seeing successful blacks should never be a surprise oppose to a regular majority. we are brainwashed into thinking blacks will go nowhere in life.

Emani! I love that you chose to use positive pictures as your representation of black people. I wish that just as negative images of blacks o out, positive ones would go viral even more! This is very inspiring.
ReplyDeleteEmani, you are right that we have been brainwashed. I am including myself because as soon as I saw the image of the young men I assumed they were gang members. A group of black men, dressed casually throwing up signs my mind had thought of no other possibilities, only gang-members. Had it been a group of young white male I may have thought fraternity. This makes me think about how much harder African Americans have to work to be seen in a positive light. Thank you for sharing things and like Janae said I wish these were the photos that went viral.
ReplyDeleteI'll third that these photos should've gone viral. I too initially thought that the picture of the guys were of young boys from the block. It is because of the "Slavery's Children " reading and the video that we watched in class that I'm striving to change my way of thinking and my actions, so that I'm not "acting out self-denigrating behaviors " (Slavery's Children, 146). I want myself, my friends, family and all African-Americans to be seen in a better light and not through the stereotypical eyes that see us as inhumane, dangerous, criminals, liars, ghetto, uneducated, etc.
ReplyDeleteWell done Emani, it is nice to see a positive side of black people. typically at first glance a white person would assume here go a bunch of rowdy black folks getting out of control. But if they took the time out to read the fine print they could understand more in depth what's really lives. They treat our accomplishments and lives as if there where the fine print ingredients on the back of junk food.. It's too long, too complicated, and who really cares!!
ReplyDeleteMy bad for some of the grammatical errors..my smart phone isn't so smart lol
